The free WebPack tools are currently at version 9.2i and can be used for Spartan 2, Spartan 2E, Spartan 3, Spartan 3E, Virtex E, Virtex 2, Virtex 2 Pro, Virtex 4 and CPLDs. They run on Windows and Linux.
The Spartan 3 is now available using 90nm (0.09 micron) technology and including multiplier circuits like the Virtex II. A newer version is the Spartan 3E which is optimized for lower cost circuits that need more logic than I/Os. Even more recent versions include the Spartan 3A, 3AN and 3A-DSP.
The Virtex 5 is the current high end FPGA (65nm technology) with three different families, but the older Virtex 4 (90nm) is still interesting.
